Art & Service

Art can be a form of service, a vehicle for healing and a tool for social change. My goal through this blog, is to share with you how I am combining art and community service to help others!

I am an Artist from Mexico City, currently studying in the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia. I am Kids Café Coordinator for SCAD’s volunteer organization called, Service Opportunities for Students or SOS, where I provide volunteering opportunities for students by engaging children from low-income families in artistic activities.

In addition, I am also giving English classes to a group of Latin American woman.

Upon graduation I plan to return to Mexico City and not only continue to build upon my artisitc body of work, but also help promote the arts in Mexico. My dream is to create a community center for the arts where people from low-income families can vent through the creative process.

More about Kids Café:

The main purpose of Kids Café program at SCAD is to provide opportunities for chidden to engage in artistic activities that promote important life values.

Yet, Kids Café is a program that is in itself run through America's Second Harvest for Coastal Georgia, a non-profit, volunteer driven organization, which acts as a local food bank that works to eradicate hunger in the area. America's Second Harvest's Kids Café Program is an after school meal program for school-age children who are at the risk for hunger. America's Second Harvest operates the program in collaboration with other community organizations that provide after school programs for disadvantaged children.

Thus, this is how America's Second Harvest comes to collaborate with the Savannah College of Art and Design. The Kids Café Coordinator, acts as a liaison between the two organizations. I am in charge of recruiting volunteers from the SCAD student body to go to America's Second Harvest's after school centers every Friday to make fun art activities with the kids as a form of art therapy and a way of promoting important values.

Kids Café is a place where love for ART, CHILDREN and SERVICE are combined to create something MAGICAL!
